Martin Luther King, Jr. is someone we should all look up to. Someone who we should all strive to be like. Not only because of his true bravery, but also because of his genuine care and love for humanity. He stood up for what was right. He knew what he had to say, and he voiced those concerns in his “I Have a Dream” speech almost 54 years ago, which is still relevant in today’s world.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was one person, and he lead a movement that changed everything.
Every single one of us has this ability. We can all lead a movement that can change everything, yet so many of us do not believe it. I have heard people say the words, “Well, I’m just one person,” and when they say this, I shake my head in disappointment.
If Martin Luther King, Jr. had this mindset there would still be two water fountains: one labeled “whites” and one labeled “colored.” Schools would still be segregated. Racism would be thriving in our country, instead of being almost nonexistent. Americans would not have witnessed an African American man take command of the White House, twice. Life would be drastically different if Martin Luther King, Jr. thought he was “just one person.”
I want to change the world. I want to change the way people think. I want to make the world a better place to live in, and I wholeheartedly believe I can do this. However, I do not believe my efforts will be as well-known as MLK’s. I do not plan on giving speeches to hundreds of thousands of people. I do not plan on traveling the world, spreading my thoughts and beliefs. I do not have extravagant plans in doing this. I just plan on being me.
I am going to create a chain reaction. I believe that if you can improve someone’s day, then you can improve someone’s life. This can be accomplished in any way, but for me, it comes from writing. I create blog posts that I believe will help people. I want to use my life experiences, both positive and negative, to show people that the world is not a horrible, negative place to be.
If I can have just one person, one, that generates a positive view about something after reading one of my posts, then I see that as a success. Because that one person will go the rest of his or her day with a positive view of the world. That one person will have an aura, a glow, that is contagious. That positivity will spread to another person, then another, and another. Before you know it, that one person has made hundreds of people have a positive outlook on life, and knowing that makes me feel like I am doing something right.
You have this power. We all have the power to make the world a better place, so why aren’t we using it? It can be as simple as just being kind. Smile at someone when you walk past him. Help someone pick up her papers after she drops them. Pay for someone’s coffee at the drive thru. I promise that your positive attitude will make everyone else have a positive attitude as well.
I have a dream that one day, we will not have to try so hard to make the world a better place. It will just be better on its own.
