Hashtag Goals

Based off of my very creative (not really) title, I’m sure you can guess what this post is about. If you own a twitter, meaning you don’t live under a rock, I can almost guarantee you have seen tweets that have “#(blahblahblah)Goals.”

Sure, it’s cute to see posts that have a giant teddy bear with roses and chocolates that ends with #RelationshipGoals. I mean, who wouldn’t want things like that in a relationship. Or maybe you’ve seen tweets that have pictures of Lamborghinis or other expensive cars that end with #LifeGoals. These are things that everyone, generically, wants, and it’s nice to say that’s your goal, but how are you going to achieve it?

This is a common phenomenon that I have seen going on. People have these crazy goals that they wish to accomplish, but they have no idea how to get there. While it is good (great actually) to have goals for yourself, it’s important to know how to reach those goals. Otherwise failure is inevitable, and no one likes to fail.

Let’s take this whole new fitness craze as an example. I personally think that it’s a great “fad” that’s going on because it’s actually good for you. Who would have thought that people would consider being healthy a fad. It’s a lifestyle, but that’s beside the point. You see people post pictures of these incredibly fit, muscular models with the word “goals.” That’s amazing that is your ultimate goal, but you need to have small, baby goals that follow you along the way.

For example, you can start out by eliminating unhealthy foods that you eat, but only one by one. Start off with replacing an apple as a side with your sandwich instead of chips, but still allow yourself that little (emphasis on the little) chocolate bar at the end of your day. Then, slowly but surely, start to get rid of all unhealthy foods in your house. It doesn’t seem too bad that way, does it? You just have to create small goals that aren’t so intimidating, and you will be successful.

The same philosophy goes for any other goal that you want to accomplish. You want to go buy a new car? Great. Don’t have enough money to do that though? Well, there’s your issue. If you look at it like that, then you won’t accomplish your goal. Instead of just saying upfront, “I need $5,000 for a new car,” you need to tell yourself, “I need to save $20 every paycheck.” Doesn’t that sound a lot less intimidating?

That’s the point, my friends.

Although you may use small goals to accomplish your ultimate goal, you have to remember that there will be some bumps along the road. If you can’t accomplish one of your small goals, then make an even smaller one and build up to it. It may take time, but you will accomplish your “big” goal.

You can do anything that you put your mind to. You just cannot overwhelm yourself, or you will not accomplish your goal. I almost promise that. You want to get that beach bod before summer? You have 4 months, you can definitely do that. You’re sick of driving your piece of crap car around? Think small, save big. You got this. You want to get all A’s this semester? Totally possible, just focus.

You can do absolutely anything you put your mind to, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
